Mia Steyn
Somatic Therapist
About
Mia Steyn is an International Nia Training Faculty member, one of only two Nia trainers in South Africa, and has been teaching Nia since 2011. Her work is deeply rooted in her own journey of healing. After surviving a bomb explosion with her family and experiencing PTSD, Mia began exploring ways to restore safety, balance and connection within her body and nervous system. Her journey led her through many modalities and therapeutic approaches, including yoga, TRE, breathwork, holotropic breathwork, reflexology and various forms of therapy. Each offered valuable insight, but it was Nia that brought the pieces together — movement, music, sensation, mindfulness, expression and the body’s innate capacity to heal and self-regulate. Before moving fully into the wellness field, Mia owned and ran an events company for many years, with a strong focus on training and empowering people to develop skills that could support sustainable livelihoods. This experience shaped her understanding of leadership, collaboration, resilience and sustainability — both personally and professionally. Today, Mia teaches and trains internationally while also using Nia therapeutically in one-to-one sessions. She works alongside physiotherapists, psychologists and other health professionals, supporting clients through movement, somatic education, nervous-system regulation and embodied awareness. Her work also extends into corporate wellness, team building, community projects and numerous collaborations with Stellenbosch University. At the heart of Mia’s work is a belief that movement can be far more than exercise. Through awareness, sensation and movement variety, we can reconnect with the intelligence of the body, develop greater adaptability and resilience, and create meaningful change from the inside out. Her passion is creating spaces where people feel safe enough to listen, move, express, heal and ultimately become more fully themselves.
